What We Do:
The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861 - 1865 was organized on May 30, 1885 by five young women in Massillon Ohio to honor the memory of their community's Union soldiers who had sacrificed their livelihood and lives in order to save the Union. They proposed to do this by annual decoration of veterans' graves, ministering to those who were wounded and ill, and caring for their widows and children.
In the Articles of Incorporation, one of the key phrases describing the mission of the Daughters is to“keep green the memory”. Daughters today continue to follow the example of these young women, who founded this organization, had so long ago. Tent members organize and participate in educational, preservation and patriotic activities, such as Remembrance Day in Gettysburg, preserving Civil War-associated locations and artifacts, raising funds for student scholarships and visiting veterans living in federal and state veterans' hospitals and homes.
